The second Test of the ongoing five-match series between England and India is set to begin on 2 July at Edgbaston, Birmingham. England currently lead the series 1-0 after a strong win in the first Test at Leeds.
For India, the second Test is crucial. Another loss here would make a comeback in the series much harder. Interestingly, India have never won a Test at Edgbaston. In eight Tests played here, they have lost seven and drawn one.
However, despite the poor record and a recent loss, there are key factors that could help Shubman Gill’s side script history in Birmingham.
Here are the three reasons why India can win the second Test against England
1. In-Form Top-Order Batters
India’s top-order batters were in great form during the first Test at Leeds. Across both innings, five centuries were scored by the Indian batters.
In the first innings, Yashasvi Jaiswal, captain Shubman Gill, and vice-captain Rishabh Pant each scored a century. In the second innings, Pant added another hundred, while KL Rahul also reached three figures.
India were in a strong position in both innings, but lower-order batting collapses hurt their totals. If the top order continues their good form and the lower order offers more support, India could post match-winning totals.
2. Spinners May Play a Bigger Role
Historically, spin bowling has had a decent impact at Edgbaston. Over 56 Tests at this venue, spinners have taken 424 wickets at an economy of 2.63, with 17 five-wicket hauls and three 10-wicket match hauls.
Conditions in Birmingham may suit India’s spinners more than Leeds did. Reports from practice sessions suggest India might play two spinners—Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav. If the pitch offers turn, this spin duo could prove to be a game-changer for India.
3. England’s Recent Inconsistency at Edgbaston
While England have a strong overall record at Edgbaston—30 wins, 11 losses, and 15 draws in 56 matches—their recent form here has been inconsistent.
In their last five Tests at this venue, England have lost three and won only two. Visiting teams have recently found ways to challenge them in Birmingham. This dip in home dominance could give India a much-needed opening to grab their first-ever Test win at Edgbaston.
