Ex-Indian cricketer feels Shubman Gill is set to be elevated as an all-format captain

Former Indian cricketer and commentator Aakash Chopra has stated that Shubman Gill is all set to emerge as the captain across all three formats, courtesy of his latest inclusion as the deputy of the Indian T20I team for the forthcoming Asia Cup 2025 campaign.

Chopra, who took to his X handle, wrote that Gill will eventually become the ODI captain, taking over the reins from the current skipper, Rohit Sharma, adding that the future all-format captain is being prepared.

“Shubman Gill is the new vice-captain for India’s T20I team. What does it mean? It means that India is heading towards him being the all-format captain. He is the Test captain, will eventually be the ODI captain, and if he is the vice-captain of the T20I side, that means a future captain is being prepared,” Chopra said on X.

“India seems to be moving in the direction of an all-format captain. With Shubman Gill’s return, Sanju Samson’s fate has more or less been sealed; he won’t feature in the playing XI now With Gill coming in as vice-captain, he will definitely play and open the batting. This essentially pushes Sanju Samson out of the XI,” Chopra told JioHotstar.

However, with Gill’s comeback to the T20I team, Sanju Samson might lose his place in the final playing XI as Gill is expected to open the innings alongside Abhishek Sharma. Former cricketer Abhishek Nayar also felt that Shubman is going to be an all-format captain in the near future.

“This squad announcement sort of tells you the mindset of the selectors. With selection of Shubman, in time, he is going to be an all-format captain, and that's where they are sort of positioning him. Great pick, terrific player I feel it’s going to be a very, very interesting next 12 months in Shubman Gill’s life,” Nayar said.

India’s T20I squad for Asia Cup 2025: Suryakumar Yadav (c), Shubman Gill (vc), Hardik Pandya, Arshdeep Singh, Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Jitesh Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, Varun Chakravarthy, Kuldeep Yadav, Harshit Rana, Rinku Singh, Sanju Samson.

Standby players: Prasidh Krishna, Washington Sundar, Riyan Parag, Dhruv Jurel, Yashasvi Jaiswal.
