On Monday, August 25, the former Indian cricketer Maninder Singh expressed his disappointment over the non-selection of Shreyas Iyer and Yashasvi Jaiswal in the Indian T20I squad for the forthcoming Asia Cup 2025 campaign, which is commencing on Tuesday, September 9.

While speaking to PTI Videos, the former Indian spinner has stated that Jasiwal is ready to play all three formats, and he should’ve been part of the T20I squad for the showpiece event. Furthermore, he doesn’t have any proper reason for why selectors keep omitting a player like Iyer from the squad.

“See, I was a little disappointed not to see these two names. Jaiswal, I think, is ready for any format and he should be there in any team. As far as Iyer is concerned, I mean, you know, I really don't know why he keeps getting left out of the Indian side because he's such a fantastic player and such a positive player and contributes to the team,” Maninder Singh told PTI Videos.

"But then this has been happening for years. And when another couple of years go, you don't give him a chance, you'll find somebody else and you'll forget about all these things. But that shouldn't happen,” he added.

Moreover, Singh also talked about Shubman Gill being elevated as the new vice-captain of the Indian T20I team, adding that it’s a clear signal from the selection committee that he is going to be the new captain of the format in the near future.

"See, I feel that the selectors have basically decided that he is going to be our future captain. And if he is going to be our future captain, then you better make him the vice-captain because Suryakumar Yadav may have just another two years of T20 cricket, then you have Gill ready under him,” he concluded.

Notably, India, UAE, Pakistan, and Oman are part of Group A in the upcoming Asia Cup 2025 event. On the other hand, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, and Hong Kong are part of Group B. The grand finale is scheduled to take place on Sunday, September 28, in Dubai.

India’s squad for Asia Cup: Surya Kumar Yadav (c), Shubman Gill (vc), Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Jitesh Sharma (wk), Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, Varun Chakaravarthy, Kuldeep Yadav, Sanju Samson (wk), Harshit Rana, Rinku Singh.

Standby players: Yashasvi Jaiswal, Prasidh Krishna, Washington Sundar, Riyan Parag, and Dhruv Jurel.
