Former Pakistan cricketer Basit Ali has stated that the game of cricket has turned into a money-making game for broadcasters. Interestingly, his comments came ahead of the forthcoming Asia Cup 2025 campaign.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ali asserted that in franchise leagues across the globe, the game of cricket comes second while business interests always take the front seat, adding that the same is going to happen in the eight-team showpiece event in the UAE.
“It’s unfortunate that cricket has turned into a money-making game. In franchise leagues across the world, cricket comes second while business interests always come first. The same will happen in this Asia Cup; Pakistan won’t win, India won’t win, Sri Lanka won’t win. The only winner will be the broadcasters,” Basit Ali said on his YouTube channel.
“Broadcasters make the real decisions, not the players on the field,” Basit Ali added.
Notably, India will lock horns with Pakistan on Sunday, September 14 in the group stage game in Dubai. India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Hong Kong, the UAE, and Oman are the eight participating countries in the campaign.
While India, Pakistan, UAE, and Oman are clubbed together in Group A, Group B comprises Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, and Hong Kong
