Family hid grandmother’s heart attack from Amanjot Kaur during India’s World Cup final

Every member of the team's performance at the Women's World Cup 2025 will be remembered, as they all helped India win their first championship. At the Dr DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai, India defeated South Africa by 52 runs to win the Women's World Cup on Sunday. However, given the crucial catch she made off Deepti Sharma's bowling in the final, Amanjot Kaur's importance cannot be understated.

Shafali Verma scored 87 as India defeated South Africa with a total of 298/7 in 50 overs. Later, Shafali claimed two wickets too as the Proteas put up a valiant fight before being bowled out for 246. Because of her overall effort, the 21-year-old standout won Player of the Match.

As the country rejoiced over India's World Cup victory, Amanjot's family broke the devastating news. According to her father, Bhupinder Singh, Amanjot's grandmother had a heart attack during the competition. In order to allow the young cricket player to concentrate on her World Cup campaign, the family made the painful decision to hide the news from her.

“Amanjot had an intuition that Biji (grandmother) is not well. First she called her sister who told her that she was at the gurdwara. Then she called me and told me to get her Biji on video call. After much insistence, I told my mother that it’s the biggest match of her career today and she wished Amanjot best of luck on the call. I told Amanjot that Biji was not well as she had low BP but we told her nothing about the heart attack. It was only after the final that we told her about the heart attack. Today, she spoke with the doctors, who will be doing more tests tomorrow,” shared Singh while speaking with The Indian Express.

With Amanjot and India winning the World Cup, the sacrifices have paid off. Hopefully, her grandparents will be fully recovered by the time she returns home, and the entire family will be able to celebrate the victory together.
