Former Indian and English cricketers slammed the Indian No.3 batter Karun Nair for his strange dismissal on the fourth day of the Lord’s Test in the ongoing Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, which is currently levelled at 1-1.
Moving into the details, Nair, who made a Test comeback after a gap of eight years, raised the eyebrows of many by deciding to leave a straight delivery from Brydon Carse and was hit right on his pads to get out plumb on 14 runs.
However, this could be an error of judgement from the Indian batter as it was a nip-backer from Carse that struck Nair, who shouldered his arms, thinking of the ball leaving away from the stumps instead.
Dinesh Karthik, who was commentating then, stated that it came completely out of the blue for England, opening the gates for them. Moreover, Karthik slammed Nair for leaving the straight ball, which struck his pad.
“Karun Nair's going to limp off, what a breakthrough for England. Completely out of the blue, he was looking solid as always. The ball didn't do much, just came in straight. I don't know what he was thinking. Karun Nair expected the ball to probably swing away, but it didn't, just held its line, kept coming straight. Pretty ordinary leave, Brydon Carse loving it, it's an important wicket,” Dinesh Karthik said on air.
Furthermore, former England cricketer Michael Vaughan also joined the queue, stating that it was a strange leave from the No.3 batter. Interestingly, Nair’s scores in the ongoing series read 0, 20, 31, 26, 40, and 14, accumulating a total of 131 runs.
“It's a very strange leave from Karun Nair. Particularly at the end he's batting, the end Carse is coming in from is the pavilion end, so you know naturally the ball is going to run back in at you, down the slope. So it's an odd leave,” Atherton stated.
“To make matters worse, he'll have a big bruise there in the morning because it hit him on the inside of the pad, so he had to hobble off,” he added.
Moreover, former Indian spinner and commentator Anil Kumble also asserted that it was a brain fade moment from Nair after putting up a lot of hard work and looking good at the crease.
“India had a great chance; they did really well to restrict England to 192. Yashasvi Jaiswal played a poor shot. Once Karun Nair got out, and then Shubman Gill, it's slight advantage to England. It was a great opportunity for Karun; he did all the hard work. He did look good, I don't know, probably it was a brain fade,” Kumble told JioHotstar.
