Former Indian cricketer amid stampede at RCB IPL title celebrations

Former Indian cricketer Madan Lal has slammed the Chinnaswamy stadium management and Karnataka state officials for poor planning and crowd management during the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) IPL title celebrations at the venue on Wednesday, June 4.

Notably, RCB secured their first-ever IPL title in 18 years after defeating Punjab Kings (PBKS) by six runs in the IPL 2025 grand finale at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Tuesday, June 3.

Later the next day, the Karnataka state officials and Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) decided to felicitate the team upon their arrival at the HAL airport. A huge crowd gathered at Chinnaswamy Stadium, where the celebrations started with the franchise.

To make things even more unfortunate, a total of 11 people died and at least 50 got injured during a stampede at the stadium as a huge crowd entered the stadium at a time to witness their favorite cricketers. Madan Lal slammed stating that people will not forget this and Virat Kohli.

"People will not forget this —or Virat Kohli. While people were dying outside, there was a celebration inside. It's truly shocking and disheartening. The families of the dead should consider suing RCB and the state government for ₹100 crore for this tragic mishap...BCCI is also shirking responsibility," Madan Lal told IANS.

Later, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah addressed the media and announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh for the family of the deceased. Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar defended the arrangements, asserting, “We had arranged for 5,000 police personnel. We couldn't use force on such a young, vibrant crowd.”

It’s important to note that the government of Karnataka had earlier cancelled the victory parade from Vidhana Soudha to M Chinnaswamy Cricket Stadium due to heavy traffic and security measures.
