“High time Rahane becomes a bit selfish” - Former Indian cricketer lashes out at KKR skipper for game-changing blunder

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) suffered a 16-run loss to the Punjab Kings (PBKS) in the 31st match of the IPL 2025 season at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur, Chandigarh, on Tuesday, April 15.

Interestingly, KKR skipper Ajinkya Rahane’s dismissal off Yuzvendra Chahal’s bowling turned the game upside down as the team collapsed badly from there to suffer a poor loss. Had Rahane decided to take DRS, he would have survived the LBW decision by the on-field umpire, and KKR would have gone on to bag a victory.

According to the visuals on the big screen, the KKR captain wasn’t keen to take DRS as he shook his head and headed back to the pavilion as soon as the umpire raised his finger after PBKS appealed strongly.

Though his partner Angkrish Raghuvanshi called the skipper for a discussion, Rahane decided not to take DRS. In the replay, it was evident that Rahane would have survived as the impact of the ball was outside off.

Former Indian cricketer and commentator Mohammed Kaif took to X (formerly Twitter) to lash out at the KKR captain for his decision not to take the review, urging him to be a bit more selfish.

"High time Rahane, the team man becomes a bit selfish. He should realise, he is KKR's main batsman, he needs to take DRS if there is slightest of doubts. #KKRvPBKS," Mohammad Kaif tweeted on his official X handle.

At the post-match presentation ceremony, Ajinkya Rahane admitted that he himself was on the wrong side for not taking DRS over his wicket.

"Nothing to explain, we all saw what happened there. Pretty disappointed with the effort. I'll take the blame, I played the wrong shot, although it was missing. He wasn't very sure (his chat with Angkrish after being given out LBW). He said it could be the umpire's call. I didn't want to take a chance at that time, I wasn't sure as well. That was the discussion," Rahane said.
