Team India head coach Gautam Gambhir has slammed a reporter for a Rishabh Pant question at the post-match press conference after India lost the Leeds Test by five wickets to England to start off the series on a worrying note.
Notably, India lost the opening Test of the five-match series despite a total of five centuries being scored. India had set a target of 371 runs for England in the fourth innings. With no support from the Leeds surface, Indian bowlers failed to live up to the expectations.
At the post-match press conference, Gambhir took questions from the media, one of which started off like, “Coach, talking about the positives... Rishabh Pant, two centuries. How was it to witness that knock from Rishabh Pant, and of course, being the vice-captain, being among the leaders in this group, how he has taken that responsibility?”
Gambhir was quick to intervene in the reporter, stating that there were three more centuries by other Indian batters as well, adding that the question could’ve been better. Though there have been a lot of great positives, it all boils down to the result.
“There are three more centuries as well. Those are big positives as well. Thank you. So I would have liked it if you would have said that hundred from Yashasvi [Jaiswal], hundred from Shubman [Gill] on debut as captain, hundred from KL [Rahul] and two centuries from Rishabh,” Gambhir stated.
“So five centuries in a Test match, is a great start to be honest. Hopefully, the question could have been better. But then again, these are great positives – and a five-for from Jasprit Bumrah as well. But ultimately everything boils down to, if you don't get the results... we go out there to get the results,” he added.
Team India will next take on England in the second Test of the five-match series at Edgbaston in Birmingham, starting on Wednesday, July 2.
