Team India head coach Gautam Gambhir is all set to rejoin the Indian cricket team at Headingley, Leeds, on Tuesday, June 17, after his mother, who was hospitalized after suffering a heart attack on June 11, is doing well now.
Notably, India is set to take on England in the five-match Test series, starting on June 20 in Leeds, which will fall in the new World Test Championship cycle. This will be the first series for the Indian team without the veteran duo of Virat Kohli, and Rohit Sharma.
"His mother is doing well now. Gautam will leave tomorrow and join the squad the same day," a BCCI source was quoted as saying by PTI.
It’s important to note that Gambhir travelled to England earlier in June to oversee the preparations of the Shubman Gill-led Indian side. However, he missed the intra-squad match between India and India A in Beckenham
In Gambhir’s absence, assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate, batting coach Sitanshu Kotak, and bowling coach Morne Morkel oversaw the preparations during the intra-squad game between India and India A.
As the team management expressed satisfaction with Team India’s preparations, the final day of the intra-squad match, which was scheduled to happen on June 17, has been called off, giving all players an additional day's rest.
In the intra-squad match, India went on to post 469 on the board after Sarfaraz Khan and Shardul Thakur scored centuries. However, the play was abruptly halted on Day 3 as the chief selector Ajit Agar and BCCI's Centre of Excellence Head VVS Laxman felt the players had enough game time.
India’s squad for the England series: Shubman Gill (C), Rishabh Pant (VC & WK), Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Sai Sudharsan, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Karun Nair, Nitish Reddy, Ravindra Jadeja, Dhruv Jurel (WK), Washington Sundar, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohd. Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep, Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav.
