Harbhajan Singh questions selectors for not selecting Sanju Samson

Former Indian cricketer Harbhajan Singh has questioned the Indian selectors for omitting Sanju Samson from the Indian squad for the upcoming Champions Trophy 2025, scheduled to start on February 19 in Pakistan and UAE.

Samson has so far played 16 ODIs since making his debut in the 50-over format, scoring 510 runs at an average of 56.66 with one century and three fifties. His best score of 108 runs came against South Africa in Paarl.

Despite having a decent record in the 50-over format for India, Samson couldn’t find a spot in the Indian team. The decision to exclude Samson didn’t go well with the former Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh.

“Truly, I feel bad for him. He scores runs, but he is dropped. I know you can only select 15, but I feel his batting suits the format. He has an average of 55-56, but he isn’t even there as a second wicketkeeper. When we talk about selecting him, people ask, In whose place? Places can be made," Harbhajan told Switch in an exclusive chat.

Indian selectors picked Rishabh Pant ahead of Sanju Samson

Notably, Indian selectors went ahead with Rishabh Pant as the back-up wicketkeeper-batter instead of Sanju Samson. It’s worth noting that KL Rahul is expected to bat at No. 5 and keep wickets for Team India in the Champions Trophy.

Furthermore, Harbhajan Singh also expressed his disappointment over the exclusion of leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal from the ICC mega event. Notably, Chahal was last part of the Indian team in the T20 World Cup that India won in 2024.

“Sanju isn’t there. Yuzvendra Chahal isn’t there, too. You’ve picked four spinners; two of them are left-armers. You could’ve included a leg-spinner for variation, too. Chahal is a superb bowler. I don’t know what wrong he did that he doesn’t fit this team,” he added.
