Rohit Sharma, one of the biggest superstars of the Indian Premier League (IPL), continues to remain an integral part of the Mumbai Indians (MI). Having started his IPL career with the Hyderabad franchise, then known as Deccan Chargers (DC), Rohit has been with MI since 2011.
Over the years, he has not only excelled as a batsman but also established himself as one of the league's most successful captains. Rohit tasted his first IPL success in 2009 as a player with DC, and his next five titles came with MI as captain. Thus, he is the joint-most successful captain in IPL history, sharing the record with MS Dhoni, both with five titles each.
Additionally, with six IPL titles, Rohit stands as the joint-most successful player in the tournament's history, tied with Ambati Rayudu. However, the 2024 IPL season marked a significant change for MI when they decided to bring back Hardik Pandya and hand him the captaincy.
The decision backfired, as MI endured a dismal campaign, finishing last in the standings with just four wins in 14 games. Fans voiced their dissatisfaction with the change in leadership, expressing their desire to see Rohit continue as captain.
Despite the team’s struggles, Rohit had a solid season with the bat, scoring 417 runs in 14 games. He recorded a century and a fifty, averaging 32.08 with an impressive strike rate of 150.00—his best in IPL history since the league began in 2008.
Ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction, speculation arose about Rohit’s future with MI, but the franchise showed faith in their veteran, retaining him for a fee of ₹16.30 crore, a slight increase from his previous contract of ₹16 crore. This marks a salary hike of 1.875% for the upcoming season.
Rohit’s recent performances in the white ball formats further underline his value. In 2023, under Rohit Sharma's captaincy, Team India finished as the runner-up in the ODI World Cup held at home.
The following year, in 2024, India clinched the T20 World Cup title under his leadership. In both tournaments, Rohit excelled with the bat, delivering several aggressive knocks at the top of the order. Hence, MI fans will undoubtedly look forward to seeing Rohit Sharma back in action, hoping he can lead the franchise both with the bat and his experience.
