“I am not sure whether it was the right one” - RP Singh questions Yashasvi Jaiswal’s batting approach in Manchester

Former Indian pacer and analyst RP Singh has questioned the Indian opening batter Yashasvi Jaiswal’s defensive approach on the opening day of the Manchester Test against England, adding that he could’ve taken up an aggressive approach from ball one.

Notably, Jaiswal could score only 20 runs off his first 64 deliveries in the first innings of the fourth Test. However, he accelerated later, scoring another 38 runs in 43 balls. However, Singh felt that Jaiswal could’ve come out proactively.

“Jaiswal left a lot of deliveries he could have driven. Once he got set, he began to play with more intent, but I think he could have been more attacking from the start. England came up with better bowling plans, targeting those areas, but Jaiswal could have played more proactively.” Singh spoke on Sony Sports Network.

While Jaiswal looked aggressive in the previous Tests right from the initial overs, he took up a defensive approach in the ongoing Test, leaving the outside off-stump deliveries, taking a lot of time to adjust at the crease before going for runs.

“When he plays with a more attacking mindset, the runs come more easily. I think there was a slight change in his approach, and I’m not sure whether it was the right one,” Singh added.

On the other hand, former Indian cricketer Saba Karim also opined his views on Jaiswal’s approach, stating that it was a mature knock according to the situation of the series. He further asserted that he wasn’t following the ball, but was waiting for the bad balls to be punished.

“The thing I liked about Jaiswal was that, even when he got beaten, he didn’t chase the ball. He showed good control; this was a mature knock. We didn’t see the usual aggressive Jaiswal, but I saw it as an evolution in his game.” Karim said.

“It was an evolution in his batting. He wasn’t following the ball, he was waiting for the right moment,” Karim added.
