ICC Champions Trophy 2025: Know Afghanistan’s squad, captain and vice-captain

Afghanistan are ready to shine in the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy starting from February 19. They stunned big teams during the ODI World Cup in India in 2023 and will be looking forward to making an impact in the showpiece event. They have named a strong 15-member squad and will be aiming to continue their meteoric rise in white-ball formats in the last few years.

Hashamatullah Shahidi has been named the skipper of the talented team while Rahmat Shah has been appointed his deputy for the tournament. The squad is a nice mix as five players in each department have been selected - five batters, five bowlers and five all-rounders. Among five batters, Ikram Alikhil and Rahmanullah Gurbaz are the wicketkeeper-batters with the latter set to open the innings like he always does.

Among all-rounders, Mohammad Nabi is always there for the team while Rashid Khan, Gulbadin Naib and Azmatullah Omarzai will play a key role in both departments. Vice-captain Rahmat Shah is more of a top-order but has been listed as an all-rounder due to his part-time off-spin bowling.

More than the fast bowlers, Afghanistan’s bowlers are the game-changers and apart from Rashid, Allah Ghazanfar and Noor Ahmad will spin the web around the opposition teams. Fareed Ahmad, Fazalhaq Farooqi and Naveed Zadran are the fast bowlers in the squad for Afghanistan.

Afghanistan have been grouped alongside Australia, South Africa and England in the Champions Trophy. They will start their campaign against South Africa at the National Stadium in Karachi on February 20. The Shahidi-led side will travel to Lahore to face England at the Gaddafi Stadium on February 26 and two days later at the same venue, they are scheduled to lock horns against Australia.

After putting up an impressive show in the World Cup, they will be aiming to go one step better in the format this time around and make it to the semis.
