ICC Champions Trophy 2025: Know England's squad, captain and vice-captain

England endured a disappointing 2023 ODI World Cup in India, making the upcoming Champions Trophy a crucial opportunity for them to prove that their white-ball cricket remains a force to be reckoned with.

However, their current preparations have not gone as planned. They are in the middle of a three-match ODI series against India, where they have already suffered two heavy defeats, conceding the series with one game still to play.

Adding to their woes, Jacob Bethell has sustained a hamstring injury, ruling him out of the third ODI. He is also likely to miss the Champions Trophy, and while Tom Banton has been called up as cover for the final ODI, a permanent replacement could be named after official confirmation of Bethell’s unavailability for the marquee event.

Jos Buttler is under increasing pressure as England’s captain. His struggles started with a 4-1 loss in the five-match T20I series in India, and now, another ODI series defeat has only intensified the scrutiny on his leadership. Several of his decisions, including team selections and tactical calls, have been questioned.

As a batter, Buttler has been getting starts but failing to convert them into significant scores consistently. His deputy, newly appointed ODI vice-captain Harry Brook, has also had a tough time on this tour, adding to England’s concerns.

Despite these struggles, England still boast a solid batting lineup with names like Phil Salt, Ben Duckett, Joe Root, and Liam Livingstone. However, their collapse in the second ODI against India, where they lost their last seven wickets for just 85 runs, highlighted their inconsistency.

Livingstone’s role will be particularly crucial in the upcoming tournament, not only for his explosive hitting in the lower middle order but also for his handy spin-bowling skills, which can provide vital support to England’s lone frontline spinner, Adil Rashid.

Both Rashid and Jamie Overton have impressed with the ball on this tour, showing good control by varying their pace and adapting their lengths to different situations. However, England’s biggest concern lies in their fast-bowling department.

Saqib Mahmood, Mark Wood, and Jofra Archer have been consistently bowling at express pace—touching 145-150 kmph—but their lack of variations has been exposed. Indian batters have used their pace to find boundaries with ease, and this has become a recurring issue for Buttler’s side.

The absence of a clear "Plan B" is proving costly, and unless England’s pace attack finds a way to adapt to different conditions, they could struggle in the spin-friendly pitches of Pakistan during the Champions Trophy.
