Apex cricket body International Cricket Council (ICC) has unveiled the Indian star pacer and spearhead of the Indian team’s attack, Jasprit Bumrah as the ICC Men’s Test Cricketer of the Year for 2024.
Notably, Jasprit Bumrah produced exceptional spells in both home and away conditions, emerging as one of the key players for India in keeping his side in contention in the ICC World Test Championship points table.
Importantly, Bumrah made a comeback to Tests in late 2023 after missing out for a long time due to a back injury. In-home conditions, he helped India register series wins against England and Bangladesh while he helped Men In Blue in South Africa and Australia away from home.
Jasprit Bumrah scalped 71 Test wickets in 2024
It’s worth noting that Bumrah was the leading wicket-taker in the longest format of the game in the calendar year 2024 with 71 scalps while second-ranked Gus Atkinson of England had 52 wickets from 11 games.
In 2024, he had bowled 357 overs in this particular format at an exceptional strike rate of 30.1 and an average of 14.92. With this feat, Bumrah emerged as just the fourth Indian bowler to scalp more than 70 Test wickets in a calendar year apart from Ravichandran Ashwin, Anil Kumble, and Kapil Dev.
Bumrah started off the calendar year 2024, helping India bag a memorable Test win in Cape Town against South Africa. He scalped eight wickets across just two innings, propelling Team India to an eight-wicket win.
Later, he bagged 19 wickets in the five-match series at home as the hosts went on to win the series by a 4-1 margin. The seasoned pacer scalped 32 wickets in the recently concluded Border Gavaskar Trophy to earn the player of the series award in five Tests.
