Defending champions Australia will lock horns with South Africa in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) Final in June 2025 at the home of cricket, Lord’s. With a six-wicket win against India at the SCG and a 3-1 series win, Men in Yellow secured their berth in the WTC Final.

For the unversed, South Africa had already secured their WTC Final spot after a two-wicket win against Pakistan in the recently concluded Boxing Day Test in Centurion.

For India to qualify for the WTC Final, they needed to win the BGT series by 3-1 to secure the automatic qualification. At least a drawn series would have kept India in the contention with Australia later taking on Sri Lanka in the away series. Had SL defeated Australia by 2-0, India would’ve had chances of qualifying for the WTC Final.

Earlier, India secured two consecutive WTC Final spots

South Africa with 66.67 PCT % and Australia with 63.73 secured the top two spots and earned their qualification. On the other hand, India missed out on the qualification after securing the WTC Final spots earlier on two consecutive instances.

In the inaugural WTC 2019-21 final, India took on New Zealand only to suffer an eight-wicket defeat at the Rose Bowl in Southampton in June 2021. Later in the WTC 2021-23 edition, India took on Australia in the final and got a 209-run trashing in June 2023 at The Oval, London.

With India not securing the WTC Final spot for the first time, there would be some chopping and changes in the squad before the team moves to the next WTC cycle.
