“If I say something….” - Kapil Dev has his say on Virat Kohli

Former Indian cricketer and 1983 World Cup-winning captain Kapil Dev has backed Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli to come back from their poor run of form in the Border Gavaskar Trophy.

Despite a hundred in Perth, Kohli could only score 190 runs in the whole series, getting dismissed in the slip cordon on eight occasions. Rohit Sharma, on the other hand, had an even poorer series with the bat with just 31 runs in five innings. He opted out of the final Test in Sydney owing to poor form.

There have been calls of dropping the duo with some even asking them to retire from the longest format. However, Kapil Dev backed Rohit and Virat to make that decision on their own when they felt the time was right.

"They are very big players. Let's hope when they think it's the right time to play when they think it's not, they will call it off," said Kapil Dev during an event hosted by the Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI).

Jasprit Bumrah bowled 151.2 overs in the Border Gavaskar Trophy and faced back spasms due to which he couldn't bowl in the final innings of the series in Sydney. Kapil Dev, on the other hand, bowled more than 300 overs alone in the 1991-92 series against Australia. However, he didn't want people to compare his and Bumrah's output,

"Please don't compare. You cannot compare one generation with another. That is not required. Today, players are scoring 300 runs in a day. It didn't happen during our time. So don't compare the two (generations)," he said.

Kapil Dev on Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rishabh Pant

Rishabh Pant and Yashasvi Jaiswal have not been named in India's T20I squad for the series against England. When asked to comment on whether the duo were rested or dropped, Kapil refrained from doing so, claiming that the selectors knew their job well.

"How can I comment on the judgment of others? I think the selectors would have though about it. So, if I say something it would be criticising them. I don't want to criticise them. They (selectors) are a group of people who must have planned and thought about that," he opined.
