“If you want only slim guys, then you should go to a modelling competition” - Sunil Gavaskar slams Shama Mohamed

Former Indian captain and commentator Sunil Gavaskar has defended Indian captain Rohit Sharma in his response to the recent statements made by the Congress National Spokesperson, Shama Mohamed, regarding his fitness.

It all started when Shama called Rohit “fat for a sportsperson”. It didn’t go well with fans, and the Sports Minister, Mansukh Mandaviya, stated that body shaming comments were deeply shameful. Moreover, the BCCI called it unfortunate.

Gavaskar also joined the queue, stating that if anyone wants slim guys, then they should opt to go for a modeling competition instead and pick all the models. He also questioned Rohit Sharma’s critics, slamming them with a strong response.

Moreover, Gavaskar has asserted that mental strength is more important for an athlete to be a part of any sport. He has also given an example of Sarfaraz Khan, who waited for his India debut due to his fitness concerns. Nevertheless, once he made international debut, he had an exceptional jon with the bat, scoring runs consistently.

"I have always said, if you want only slim guys, then you should go to a modelling competition and pick all the models. It’s not about that. It’s about how well you can play cricket. We talked about Sarfaraz Khan—he was vilified for a long time because he was on the heavier side. But if he scores 150 for India in a Test match and follows it up with another two or three fifty-plus scores, then what’s the issue?" Gavaskar was quoted as saying by India Today.

"I don’t think size has anything to do with it. It’s your mental strength—whether you can last the distance—that’s the most important thing. Bat well, bat for long, and score runs," he further added.
