India crushed the West Indies inside three days to win by an innings and 140 runs to start off the two-match Test series with a 1-0 lead at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Saturday, October 4.
Delving into the details of the game, West Indies batted first and got bundled out for 162 runs in the first innings. Mohammed Siraj was the star bowler with a four-wicket haul. In response, India posted 448/5 in the first innings before declaring. KL Rahul (100), Dhruv Jurel (125), and Ravindra Jadeja (104*) were the star batters.
In the third innings, West Indies got bundled out for 146 runs to lose the game by an innings and 140 runs. Ravindra Jadeja was the wrecker-in-chief with a four-wicket haul while Mohammed Siraj scalped three wickets. Jadeja was adjudged the player of the match.
On that note, let’s take a look at who said what after the first Test.
Indian captain Shubman Gill
Six losses in a row. But as long as we keep winning the matches it does not matter. This was a perfect game for us, three centurions in the game and we fielded really well, no complaints. Whenever you get a start, both of us got starts and could not convert, plenty of others did and happy for them. When you have quality spinners like them it is difficult to rotate, that is the challenge and fun of playing in India, there will be someone out there to get the job done. So many things, it is hard to pin down to one thing, we have played as team and got out of tough situations. If we keep learning and using the experience then I will be happy.
West Indies captain Roston Chase
When you win the toss and get bowled out for 160-odd it is tough to come back from that. Not the performance we were looking for. We have to bat better especially in India you have to put up a big first innings total and that is something we need to look at. No problem with the decision, everyone wanted to bat first, there was a bit of moisture and this is Test cricket, you expect moisture and we had to batted better. The timing was off, when we took the second new ball we had to make the batters play more. The batting is the main problem, getting those partnerships and we didn't get any fifty partnerships, in cricket it is about getting partnerships.
Player of the Match, Ravindra Jadeja
I have been working hard on my batting. We had two months off, no Test cricket or ODIs, I was working on my fitness and skills during that time. I have been batting at no. 8 or 9, but now I have a number, number 6, I need no hurry or rush, I can take my time and play my game. Playing on red soil is fun, you get more turn and bounce, you enjoy that as a spinner. I would like to thank the coach and management, being the vice captain you are always there and I am happy to do it. I am not the captain yet, Kuldeep has bowled so much for India and Washi is also there, no need to give suggestions as they have all played for a long time.
