At its next annual meeting, scheduled for July 17–20, the International Cricket Council (ICC) is anticipated to make a major decision regarding a possible India-Pakistan matchup at the T20 World Cup 2026.
In ICC competitions, India and Pakistan have historically been placed in the same group, guaranteeing a highly anticipated matchup during the group stage. The two teams have played some memorable matches in ICC events, including India's famous win over Pakistan in Melbourne during the 2022 T20 World Cup.
Pakistan travelled to India for the 2016 T20 World Cup and the 2023 World Cup, but India refused to travel to Pakistan for the 2023 Asia Cup and the upcoming 2025 Champions Trophy.
ICC Set to Place India and Pakistan in Different Groups for 2026 T20 World Cup
However, due to worsening relations between the two nations, a PTI report suggests that the ICC may now break from tradition. If this change is implemented, the two teams might only meet if both advance to the tournament's knockout stages.
The 2026 T20 World Cup will be jointly hosted by India and Sri Lanka.
According to PTI sources cited by Times Now, the BCCI is aware that this issue is likely to be raised at the ICC's annual conference.
"The issue is bound to come up for discussion at the annual conference. While the prospect of India and Pakistan not playing in the ICC knockouts is unlikely, not drawing them in the same group, which has been the norm at ICC events, is a possibility," a BCCI source told PTI.
The increased geopolitical tension between India and Pakistan is believed to be the main reason behind this potential change. After an alleged unprovoked attack on Indian borders, relations have deteriorated significantly. Operation Sindoor, which targeted terror base camps in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), was the Indian Army's response.
Additionally, it has been reported that the BCCI is considering withdrawing from the 2025 Asia Cup, scheduled for September. Given India’s crucial role in attracting spectators and generating revenue, the Asia Cup might not take place at all if India pulls out.
