The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has received a proposal from Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) to host a short white-ball series in August. This strategy follows the cancellation of India's planned tour of Bangladesh.
The series was postponed to next year, with the BCCI and the Bangladesh Cricket Board citing scheduling issues and international obligations as reasons. Originally, India was scheduled to play six white-ball matches in Bangladesh from August 17 to August 31.
Although the BCCI has not yet provided a formal response, if the series is approved, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, who are now only available for ODI matches, may return to play the following month.
Discussions with players, head coach Gautam Gambhir, and top selector Ajit Agarkar are anticipated to occur during or after the Lord's Test in London this week, where BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia is expected to be. Following these discussions, the board is anticipated to reply to SLC's request.
Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, the biggest stars of Indian cricket and both now retired from the longest (Tests) and shortest (T20Is) formats, are expected to feature in the ODIs if the BCCI approves the SLC's request.
Asia Cup’s fate to be decided in 2-3 days
The BCCI's stance on the Asia Cup, which involves Pakistan—India's opponents with whom political tensions are still present, will have an impact on the decision that is anticipated in the coming days.
The BCCI will have the last word as the tournament hosts; however, the Government of India's direction will influence the choice. Subject to official government approval, the Asia Cup is scheduled for September 10–28.
