Cricket Australia has announced that the recent Border-Gavaskar Trophy attracted a record number of Indian supporters. The India versus Australia series experienced a sixfold rise in ticket sales from Indian residents compared to the previous Border-Gavaskar Trophy held by Australia in 2018/19.
Cricket Australia said that nearly 6,000 travelling fans purchased tickets from India. This was in addition to those who bought tickets from friends and relatives in Australia.
The series drew a total of 837,879 spectators, the fourth most for any Test series in Australia and the highest for any non-Ashes series. According to CA, about 5% of all ticket purchasers traveled from other countries to attend the matches.
In addition to breaking attendance records at venues across the country, at least eight sessions averaged over two million viewers, with 40 sessions averaging more than one million.
“We are delighted that Australia has become a preeminent destination for Indian cricket.” - Cricket Australia
India led the way in international ticket sales for the 2017 Australian cricket season, outselling the United Kingdom and the United States. The Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground was a big success with Indian fans, who purchased more than two-thirds of the tickets.
“We are delighted that Australia has become a pre-eminent destination for Indian cricket fans, fueled by the enormous interest in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series. The passion of Indian supporters helped enhance the electric atmosphere at every ground across the summer. We’re committed to deepening our relationship with cricket fans all over the world and enhancing the fan experience for both local and traveling fans alike.
The increasing number of traveling Indian fans this summer highlights Australian cricket’s increasingly important role in facilitating tourism and trade outcomes for governments and businesses across Australia,” said Joel Morrison, Cricket Australia’s Executive General Manager of Events and Operations.
The Indian cricket teams will return to Australia next summer, with the men's squad playing three ODIs and five T20Is in October-November 2025, and the women's team playing a seven-match multi-format series from February to March 2026.
