India’s ODI squad for New Zealand series announced; Shubman Gill & Shreyas Iyer return

BCCI names India's ODI squad for New Zealand series with Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer back after injuries; Ruturaj Gaikwad dropped as selectors refresh top order for away challenge.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), on Saturday, December 3, named India’s 15-man ODI squad for the forthcoming three-match series against New Zealand, scheduled to start on Sunday, January 11, in Vadodara.

While the ODI series against New Zealand commences on Sunday, January 11, in Vadodara, before they travel to Rajkot for the second ODI on Wednesday, January 14. The series will end with the third ODI on Sunday, January 18, in Indore. 

While Shubman Gill will make a comeback to the squad as the ODI captain, Shreyas Iyer will be the vice-captain, subject to fitness clearance from the BCCI CoE. On the other hand, Mohammed Siraj will also return to the squad, with the star all-rounder Hardik Pandya being rested.

Gill, Iyer, and Siraj will return to the squad, replacing Tilak Varma, Dhruv Jurel, and Ruturaj Gaikwad. Notably, Gill and Iyer are scheduled to play a match each in the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy campaign on Tuesday, January 6.

Notably, Gill was ruled out of the recent South Africa ODI series because of a neck spasm, while Iyer is set to make his comeback from a spleen injury he sustained against Australia Down Under. Meanwhile, Siraj last played for India in a three-match ODI series against Australia.

“Hardik Pandya has not been cleared by the BCCI COE to bowl 10 overs in a match, and considering the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup to follow, his workload is being managed,” the BCCI statement read.

Shubman Gill (c), Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul (wk), Shreyas Iyer (vc)*, Washington Sundar, Ravindra Jadeja, Mohammed Siraj, Harshit Rana, Prasidh Krishna, Kuldeep Yadav, Rishabh Pant (wk), Nitish Kumar Reddy, Arshdeep Singh, and Yashasvi Jaiswal.
