India's ODI squad for South Africa series announced; new captain named in Shubman Gill's absence

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), on Sunday, November 23, named India’s strong 15-man squad for the upcoming three-match ODI series against South Africa. KL Rahul has been announced as the stand-in captain.

Notably, the ODI series is scheduled to start on Sunday, November 30, in Ranchi. For the unversed, captain Gill has been ruled out of the three-match series due to a neck injury, which he sustained during the first Test against the Proteas.

KL Rahul last captained Team India in 2023 when they defeated South Africa 2-1 in an ODI series. Moreover, Indian ODI vice-captain Shreyas Iyer has also been ruled out of the series due to his recent injury on the Australian tour.

India will enter this ODI series after suffering a 1-2 series defeat to Australia Down Under. Indian veteran opening batter Rohit Sharma was awarded the player of the series for his century and a half-century in the three-match ODI series vs Australia.

Talking about the inclusions for the South African ODI series, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Tilak Varma, and Rishabh Pant have been named among batters, while the senior all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja also returned

In the exclusions, all-rounder Axar Patel has been axed while Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah have been rested. Moreover, Dhruv Jurel continues to be part of the ODI squad with Sanju Samson not included.
