India’s potential Champions Trophy semifinal opponent: Who will they face?

Australia secured their place in the Champions Trophy 2025 semifinals after their Group B match against Afghanistan was abandoned due to a wet outfield in Lahore on Friday. While this confirmed Australia’s progression, Afghanistan still has a slim chance of making it to the knockout stage, depending on the result of the England vs. South Africa match on Saturday.

If South Africa wins their match against England, they will finish as the Group B toppers with five points from three matches and secure a spot in the semifinals. However, if they lose, they will remain at three points, equal to Afghanistan, and the second semifinalist from Group B will be determined by Net Run Rate (NRR). South Africa currently holds the advantage with a superior NRR, making them the favorites to qualify in case of a tie on points.

Meanwhile, in Group A, the final match between India and New Zealand will decide which team finishes as the group leader. Both teams currently have four points from two matches, but New Zealand has a better NRR. The outcome of this match will determine India’s semi final opponent.

India’s Possible Opponents in the Semifinals

If India Defeats New Zealand:

India will top Group A and face the second-placed team from Group B. If South Africa loses to England but qualifies on NRR, they will take on India in the semifinals. However, if South Africa suffers a heavy defeat and Afghanistan surpasses them on NRR, then Afghanistan will become India’s opponent.

If South Africa wins their match against England, they will finish as Group B winners, meaning India will face Australia in the semifinals.

If India Loses to New Zealand:

In this case, India will finish second in Group A. If South Africa loses to England, Australia will top Group B, and India will face them in the semifinals. However, if South Africa wins against England, they will top Group B and play against India in the semifinals.

With multiple possibilities still in play, all eyes will be on the upcoming Group A and Group B matches to determine India’s path forward in the tournament.
