IPL 2025: 3 CSK players who are yet to prove their worth

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) had a terrific start to their campaign this season with a win over arch-rival Mumbai Indians (MI) at Chepauk. CSK’s bowlers restricted MI to just 155 runs for the loss of nine wickets. Rachin Ravindra and Ruturaj Gaikwad’s half-centuries led CSK to the target of 156 runs in 19.1 overs with four wickets in hand.

However, the five-time champions suffered a jolt against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in their next game. Records were not in favor of RCB in this game; however, the batters did well to score 196 runs for the loss of seven wickets. In reply, CSK managed just 146 runs for the loss of eight wickets and lost the match by 50 runs. It was RCB’s first win over CSK at Chepauk since the first edition of the tournament.

The next game led CSK to travel to Guwahati to face Rajasthan Royals (RR). RR scored 182 runs for the loss of nine wickets while batting first. CSK could score only 176 runs for the loss of six wickets and fell short of the target by six runs.

CSK’s bowlers have been on the top of their mark so far. Two out of the top five wicket-takers this season are from CSK only. However, their batting unit has yet to prove their worth. Apart from Rachin and Ruturaj, no other batter has managed to score more than 100 runs in total so far.

On that note, let’s look at the 3 CSK players who are yet to prove their worth:

1. Deepak Hooda

Hooda came into the auction with a base price of INR 75 lakh. CSK fought a battle against Sunrisers Hyderabad and managed to pick Hooda for a price of INR 1.7 crore. He has experience of playing over 100 IPL games and has almost scored 1500 runs. However, Hooda has failed to capitalize on the two opportunities that he has received and has made just seven runs.

2. Rahul Tripathi

Tripathi also had a base price of INR 75 lakh and CSK shelled out INR 3.4 crore to have him in the squad. The right-handed batter has faced 23 deliveries so far and has scored just 30 runs. He has hit just one six in three outings for CSK.

3. Sam Curran

Curran started his IPL career with Punjab Kings in 2019. He played for CSK in the next two seasons and then for the Punjab Kings in 2023 and 2024. CSK picked Curran in the IPL 2025 auction. He has scored just 12 runs in two games for CSK this season and has failed to pick a wicket.
