IPL 2025: 3 Players Who Might Be Released by Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR)

In IPL 2025, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) showed brilliance but struggled with consistency. They won only 5 matches out of 14, losing 7, and finished in 8th spot on the points table. Several KKR players underperformed at crucial moments.

Potential releases are expected as part of their reshaping strategy. With a solid core in place, the franchise aims to fine-tune its squad, blending youth and experience, to mount a stronger title challenge in the next season. Optimizing overseas slots and team balance will be key as KKR plans for 2026.

Here are 3 players who might be released by Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR):

1. Venkatesh Iyer

Venkatesh Iyer, who was bought for INR 23.75 crores by KKR, had a lackluster IPL 2025. He only amassed 142 runs at an average of 20.28, a strike rate of 139.28, and one fifty in 11 games. Iyer was definitely dragged down by his huge price tag and couldn’t handle the pressure to perform.

Since KKR's top order solidity was harmed by Iyer’s inability to deliver solid starts or effectively anchor the innings, the management may decide to let him go, as several fresh domestic options are starting to emerge.

2. Spencer Johnson

KKR selected Australian left-arm bowler Spencer Johnson after he had a decent IPL 2024 season for GT. He had great expectations going into the 2025 IPL season, but he fell short of them. Johnson took just one wicket in four games at an economy rate of 11.73.

He was a liability in a team already struggling with inconsistent bowling because of his lack of effect in the powerplay and death overs. For the future, KKR may want to spend money on more dependable international pacers.

3. Rahmanullah Gurbaz

In IPL 2025, Rahmanullah Gurbaz of Afghanistan had a lacklustre season despite his tremendous batting ability. He played in five games and averaged 18.50 while scoring 74 runs.   He spent more time on the bench and faced competition from Quinton de Kock for the opening wicket-keeping position.

Gurbaz may be left out of the squad in favor of players who provide better results both behind the wickets and with the bat because of his dismal performance in just five games. KKR will need to make some tough calls ahead of the IPL 2026 season, and expect some big names to be released.
