IPL 2025: 3 Reasons why CSK are struggling

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are having a tough time in IPL 2025. They are currently in ninth place on the points table. CSK have won just one out of four games so far. They have only two points and a net run rate of -0.891. Their next match is against Punjab Kings (PBKS) in Mullanpur on 8 April. But to bounce back, they need to fix a few key issues quickly.

Here are the three reasons why CSK are struggling in the IPL 2025

Ruturaj Gaikwad’s captaincy

With the bat, CSK skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad has scored two fifties in four games so far. But he still needs to be more consistent. His captaincy in pressure situations has also raised questions. Many fans have been surprised by his bowling changes and field placements this season.

Lack of intent from the whole batting unit

In their season opener in Chennai against Mumbai Indians (MI), CSK chased down the target in the last over. But with better intent, they could have finished the game one or two overs earlier. In the last three matches, during every chase, their top batters have struggled to score big runs. They also seemed to lack intent while chasing targets of over 180. At times, it looked like they were playing their shots too late to make any real impact on the result. So, the batting unit needs to show more intent, especially at the top. They must make better use of the first six overs in the upcoming games.

No impactful performances from Ravichandran Ashwin 

It has not been a great homecoming for Ravichandran Ashwin so far. In four matches, he has taken only three wickets. Considering his experience and skill, he was expected to do better and keep a tighter economy rate (9.23 economy rate so far in four games). Noor Ahmad has been their best spinner so far (tournament’s highest wicket-taker so far with 10 wickets), even with experienced players like Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja in the team. With the bat, Ashwin got just one chance. He scored 11 runs against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB).
