IPL 2025: 3 Threats for Gujarat Titans (GT)

Gujarat Titans (GT) will kick off their IPL 2025 campaign on 25 March at home in Ahmedabad against Punjab Kings (PBKS). This season, their primary goal will be to rediscover their form and reclaim the title. After winning the championship in 2022 and finishing as runners-up in 2023, GT had a disappointing 2024 season.

They failed to qualify for the playoffs and ending eighth on the points table. Under Shubman Gill’s leadership, they will aim for a much-improved performance this time. However, there are key concerns that need to be addressed—otherwise, things could get even worse for GT.

Here are the 3 Threats for GT in IPL 2025

1. Inexperienced middle-order batting

Gujarat Titans (GT) have a top-heavy batting lineup featuring Shubman Gill, Jos Buttler, and Sai Sudharsan. However, the middle order, comprising Mahipal Lomror, Shahrukh Khan, and Rahul Tewatia, needs to step up. A lack of experience and consistency in that department could be a concern for GT this season. Without a settled and in-form middle order, securing regular wins might prove challenging.

2. Over dependence on Rashid Khan

The Afghanistan spin-bowling all-rounder is undoubtedly one of GT's key players. However, over-reliance on him could hurt the team once again this season. While Rashid Khan is primarily known for his spin, his ability to contribute with the bat—playing impactful cameos with his power-hitting and bottom-handed shots—is a valuable asset for any captain. But if he does not receive adequate support from the other end, whether while bowling or batting, his impact could be limited. Last season, Rashid took 10 wickets in 12 matches at an economy rate of 8.40, his worst-ever IPL season in terms of economy. How Gill utilises him in both departments will be crucial; otherwise, another challenging season might await Rashid.

3.Shubman Gill’s captaincy

After leading GT to back-to-back finals—winning the title in 2022 and finishing as runners-up in 2023—Hardik Pandya left the team, and Shubman Gill was appointed as the new captain. However, the 2024 season turned out to be a disappointing one, with GT finishing eighth, securing just 12 points in 14 games. The added responsibility of captaincy might have affected Gill’s batting form as well. In 2023, he won the Orange Cap by scoring 890 runs in 17 matches, but last season, his tally dropped to 426 runs in 12 games at an average of 38.73. For GT to perform well this season, they need both the batter and the leader in Gill to step up. As an opener, he must provide strong starts, and as a skipper, he needs to make smart tactical decisions and use his bowlers effectively to counter opposition batters. GT has placed its trust in the young captain once again, but how well he handles the pressure, improves his leadership, and leads from the front remains to be seen.
