Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) have assembled a 24-member squad for IPL 2025 as they look to improve on last season’s performance. After securing playoff spots in 2022 and 2023, they finished seventh in 2024 with 14 points from 14 games.
Now, with a revamped squad and new leadership, LSG will aim to bounce back and challenge for the title. However, concerns such as a lack of experienced players and key injuries could stand in their way of achieving ultimate glory.
Here are the 3 Threats for LSG in IPL 2025
1. New leadership under Rishabh Pant
A new era is set to begin for LSG as Rishabh Pant takes over the captaincy. In the auction, LSG went all out, spending ₹27 crore to acquire him—making him the most expensive player in IPL history.
However, he will need to deliver both as a batter and a leader. Despite his immense talent, Pant has often faced criticism regarding his consistency with the bat. Now, with the added responsibility of captaincy, his approach at the crease will be crucial for LSG’s success.
His ability to handle pressure and perform under expectations will play a significant role in shaping the team’s campaign. This year, the goal will not only be to return to the playoffs but also to challenge for their maiden IPL title. For that to happen, Pant must lead from the front. Whether he can thrive under pressure and guide his team to glory remains to be seen.
2. Lack of experienced spinners
LSG’s spin bowling department for this season looks somewhat inexperienced. Ravi Bishnoi will be the key factor, as he is their most potent spin-bowling option. Apart from him, M. Siddharth and Shahbaz Ahmed are in the squad, but Siddharth lacks experience, and Shahbaz has struggled with consistency.
This puts a huge responsibility on them to support Bishnoi by taking crucial wickets, especially in the middle overs. If they fail to step up, the lack of experienced spinners could become a major concern for Pant throughout the season.
3. Injury concerns of pacers
The Indian pace bowling unit was set to be one of LSG’s biggest strengths, but ahead of this season, they have suffered massive setbacks due to injuries. Mohsin Khan has been ruled out for the entire season, with Shardul Thakur brought in as his replacement.
Avesh Khan is in the squad, but reports suggest he will miss the first three games due to a knee injury sustained in January. Additionally, Mayank Yadav is expected to be available only for the latter half of the season as his recovery from a back injury has been further delayed by a new toe injury. Even before playing their first match, injuries have severely impacted LSG’s pace attack, which could prove costly throughout the season.
