IPL 2025: 3 Threats for Mumbai Indians (MI)

MI will have more energy going into the 2025 IPL season. The Mumbai Indians will enter the Indian Premier League arena with their rich history in mind, putting the past year behind them.

The team will look to add another feather to its storied cap as it is tied with the Chennai Super Kings for the most titles with five. MI placed last in the ten-team table the previous year.

This time, the team will try to put on a far better performance. Let's take a close look at the main dangers facing the MI team before the five-time champions begin their IPL 2025 campaign.

Here are the 3 threats for Mumbai Indians (MI) in IPL 2025:

1. Jasprit Bumrah’s injury

Jasprit Bumrah suffered a reoccurrence of the back injury for which he had undergone surgery in 2023 during the Australia tour earlier this year. He had missed the 2022 T20 World Cup and 2023 IPL for the same reason but returned before the 2023 World Cup and performed well in India’s T20 World Cup 2024 win.

Bumrah is a core bowler for the Mumbai Indians, and he is slated to miss at least the first few matches for the MI side in IPL 2025. MI has firepower in its pace unit, with Trent Boult and Deepak Chahar leading the way with Hardik Pandya for company. But apart from them, there are not many named pacers in the squad, and the longer Bumrah remains absent, the more difficult the journey will become for MI.

2. Rohit Sharma’s form

Rohit Sharma's form will be another matter of concern for MI. It has been ten years since the five-time IPL champion had a particularly successful season with the bat in the IPL, despite the fact that the Indian captain has been in incredible form in white-ball cricket at the international level.

Rohit has never scored more than 450 runs in the league since IPL 2016 and has just twice (in 2019 and 2024) surpassed the 400-run milestone. The 37-year-old has never averaged higher than 32.08 in the previous nine seasons. He did score a century last year, but the overall aggregate was poor. His poor form might derail MI’s chances for playoffs qualification.

3. Lack of second-quality spinner

Mitchell Santner is the lone premier spinner for the MI side in IPL 2025. There is not a single known spinner for Santner to partner with. They will hope that their Afghanistan import, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, does wonders for them. Apart from him, there are part-timers Tilak Varma, Will Jacks, and Krishnan Shrijith.

However, Mujeeb Ur Rahman has never been successful in the IPL. He has 19 wickets in 19 games at an average of 31.16 and an economy of 7.18. Bowling on the Wankhede Stadium pitch will not be easy for Mujeeb, and remember, he is coming off a hand injury, which meant he was out of action for five months.
