Rajasthan Royals (RR) lost to Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the second playoff last season. This time, they will aim for their second IPL title under the leadership of Sanju Samson. However, due to an injury, Samson will miss the first three games, and Riyan Parag will step in as captain.
With a 20-member squad, RR will be determined to chase ultimate glory. However, there are certain areas of concern that could hurt their chances of winning the title this season.
Here are the 3 Threats for RR in IPL 2025
1. Sanju Samson to miss first three games
RR’s regular skipper, Sanju Samson, will miss the first three games of the season as he is still recovering from a right index finger injury sustained during the series against England. In his absence, Riyan Parag has been handed the captaincy—a huge opportunity for him to lead the franchise. However, the big question is how he will handle the pressure. Will this added responsibility affect his batting? That remains to be seen. This leadership change is one of the key challenges that could pose a threat to RR, at least in the first three matches.
2. Lack of quality Indian spinners
Last season, RR had two top Indian spinners in Ravichandran Ashwin and Yuzvendra Chahal. However, this year, they have not retained either of them and, interestingly, failed to secure top Indian spinners in the auction as well. They do have two quality spinners in Maheesh Theekshana and Wanindu Hasaranga, but both are from Sri Lanka, which makes it challenging for RR to use them together due to the overseas player restrictions. Lack of quality spinners in the squad could hurt RR this season, especially when it comes to containing opponents in the middle overs and taking crucial wickets.
3. Fitness of Jofra Archer
Jofra Archer could be the X-factor for RR this season, but his fitness has been a major concern in recent years. In a long tournament like the IPL, staying fit is crucial, especially for a fast bowler like him. Managing his workload while keeping him in top shape will be a big challenge for the RR management. Form is another concern, as Archer has struggled recently, both in the series against India and during England’s Champions Trophy campaign. However, this IPL could be the perfect stage for his redemption. As of now, though, his performance remains uncertain.
