IPL 2025: 5 Flop signings of Chennai Super Kings (CSK)

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are already out of the playoff race in IPL 2025, currently sitting in the tenth spot with just six points from 12 games and a net run rate of -0.992. This is undoubtedly one of the most disappointing seasons that CSK have ever had in the IPL, especially considering the way they have performed in Chennai at their fortress.

After retaining five players, CSK surprised fans with some of their auction picks, but there was still hope for a better performance than what they have delivered so far. Unfortunately, several top, proven domestic and overseas names have failed to perform consistently this season.

Here are the five flop signings of CSK in IPL 2025:

1. Rahul Tripathi

Tripathi is known as a proven batter in the IPL, having represented multiple franchises over the years. CSK showed faith in the 34-year-old top-order batter, giving him five games, but he failed to deliver. Tripathi has managed only 55 runs, with an average of 11.00 and a strike rate of 96.49.

2. Sam Curran

The English all-rounder was once one of the highest-paid players in IPL history. In 2023, Punjab Kings (PBKS) bought him for a staggering ₹18.50 Crore. However, his form has dipped drastically over the last two years and that has also impacted his international career in recent times.

When CSK brought him in, the hope was that Curran would bounce back, but he hasn’t delivered. In five matches, he has scored just 114 runs at an average of 22.80 and a strike rate of 135.71 — including a single 88-run knock against PBKS. With the ball, he has taken only one wicket in five games, at an economy rate of 11.08.

3. Deepak Hooda

Another batter known for his explosive hitting ability in the top and middle order, Deepak Hooda has proved his worth in both IPL and international cricket. However, for CSK this season, he has been a major disappointment.

In six matches, he has scored just 31 runs, averaging 6.20 with a strike rate of 75.60. He struggled with timing, lacked game awareness, and wasted the chances given to him by CSK.

4. Jamie Overton

The English all-rounder was expected to contribute with both bat and ball, but Jamie Overton has been underwhelming, especially with the ball. In three matches, he went wicketless while conceding 83 runs. With the bat, he scored 15 runs across two innings at a strike rate of 214.28.

5. Vijay Shankar

Shankar has also failed to make his opportunities count in IPL 2025. In six matches, he has scored only 118 runs at an average of 39.33 and a strike rate of 129.67. While his unbeaten 69 against Delhi Capitals showed promise, it came in a losing cause.

CSK haven’t used him with the ball, and with the bat, he has lacked consistency and failed to maintain a strong strike rate. Fans have voiced frustration, especially with his lack of urgency while batting in the middle order.
