The IPL 2025 Playoffs are beginning from 29 May as Punjab Kings (PBKS) will take on Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in Qualifier 1 in Mullanpur. At the same venue, on 30 May, GT will lock horns with MI in the Eliminator.
But ahead of these playoff encounters, all these teams have suffered some setbacks as some of their in-form overseas players have left the tournament due to international commitments. Replacements for some have been announced already by their respective franchises, but still, how they will go if given chances remains to be seen.
PBKS – Marco Jansen (SA)
The star all-rounder has left the tournament as Jansen has to join the South Africa squad for their upcoming World Test Championship (WTC) 2025 Final against Australia, scheduled to take place at Lord’s, England, from 11 to 15 June.
In 14 games this season, Jansen took 16 wickets and played a huge role in PBKS’ success so far. Hence, a huge void to fill for them, but they have not named any replacement for him as of now in the squad.
RCB – Lungi Ngidi (SA) and Jacob Bethell (ENG)
Ngidi is also set to join the South Africa squad for the WTC 2025 Final. This pacer took four wickets in two games and looked impressive. On the other side, Jacob Bethell has left to join the England squad, gearing up for their home white-ball series against the West Indies.
Bethell played only two games, scoring 67 runs, including a fifty. However, RCB have announced New Zealand’s Tim Seifert as Bethell’s replacement and Zimbabwe’s Blessing Muzarabani as Ngidi’s replacement.
GT – Kagiso Rabada (SA) and Jos Buttler (ENG)
GT will not have the services of Kagiso Rabada and their star wicketkeeper-batter, Jos Buttler. Rabada is set to join the South Africa squad for the WTC 2025 Final, and Buttler is set to join England's squad for the West Indies series at home. Rabada played only four games, taking two wickets, but Buttler was one of their in-form players.
He played 14 matches, scoring 538 runs, at an average of 59.77 and a strike rate of 163.03, including five fifties. So, GT have to fill that void and for that, they have named Sri Lanka’s Kusal Mendis as Buttler’s replacement. Although they have not brought in any replacement for Rabada as of now.
MI – Ryan Rickelton (SA), Corbin Bosch (SA), and Will Jacks (ENG)
MI are the most affected team, it seems, as their three overseas players have left. The wicketkeeper-batter, Ryan Rickelton (388 runs in 14 games), and all-rounder Corbin Bosch have left for the WTC 2025 Final, being a part of the South Africa squad.
Will Jacks (233 runs and six wickets) has left, being a part of England’s squad to play in the West Indies series at home. Hence, MI have announced England’s Jonny Bairstow, Richard Gleeson, and Sri Lanka’s Charith Asalanka as the replacements of Rickelton, Bosch, and Jacks respectively.
