The Indian Premier League has changed its rules about replacing players who get injured or sick during the season. This is after Mumbai Indians picked Corbin Bosch as a replacement player for Lizaad Williams. This breached Bosch’s existing contract with the Pakistan Super League (PSL), and now he might face legal action from the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).
Previously, teams could only replace players until their seventh match. Now, in the 2025 season, teams can make replacements up until their 12th league match. This gives teams more time to find a substitute if someone gets hurt.
To get a substitute, the player must be on a list called the Registered Available Player Pool (RAPP). Also, the player must not charge a fee that's less than his reserved price in the RAPP list. If a bowler is already listed by one team as a practice bowler, another team can pick him as a replacement.
List of players who have already been replaced
So far, for IPL 2025, these players have been replaced:
-
Kolkata Knight Riders: Chetan Sakariya (base price - INR 75 lakh) replaced Umran Malik (auction price - INR 75 lakh)
-
Mumbai Indians: Mujeeb-ur-Rahman (base price - INR 2 crore) replaced Allah Ghazanfar (auction price - INR 4.8 crore)
-
Sunrisers Hyderabad: Wiaan Mulder (base price - INR 75 lakh) replaced Brydon Carse (auction price - INR 1 crore)
When MI brought in Bosch to replace Lizaad, they didn't announce how much Bosch cost them. Bosch went unsold at the mega auction in November, even though he was available for a base price of 30 lakh rupees. MI had bought Lizaad for 75 lakh rupees, which was also his base price.
The money paid to a replacement player doesn't count toward the team's salary cap during that season. However, if the team wants to keep the replacement player for the next season, his salary will then count against the salary cap. Also, teams can't have more than 25 players in their squad.
If a player is replaced mid-season after playing in at least one game, these conditions must be met:
-
The injury or illness must happen before the team's 12th match.
-
A doctor chosen by the BCCI (the governing body for cricket in India) must confirm it's a season-ending issue.
-
The player would have been available for the rest of the matches if he hadn't been injured or gotten sick.
