IPL 2025: CSK playoffs qualification scenario

Following their most recent nine-wicket loss to the Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday, the Chennai Super Kings' (CSK) dreams of qualifying for the IPL 2025 Playoffs are in shambles.

The loss put MS Dhoni's team further behind in the IPL standings, and it was their sixth loss in eight games. Even though Dhoni has said that the squad will approach this situation one game at a time and maintain their hopes, CSK is still in the running for the playoffs.

CSK IPL 2025 Playoff Qualification Scenario

With four points from eight games, CSK is currently six points behind the Punjab Kings, who are in fourth position. Even though their mathematical odds are still modest, if CSK wins all six of their remaining games and a few other outcomes go their way, they can slip into the playoffs' final four.

So far in the IPL season, no two seasons have passed without CSK making it to the final. CSK can learn a lot from their bitter opponents, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, who defeated them last season to qualify for the playoffs with just 14 points.

The first time a team qualified for the playoffs with just 14 points since the league's expansion to 10 teams in 2022 was when RCB defeated CSK in their head-to-head match in the last league match of 2024 and qualified due to a higher net run rate.

Nevertheless, in addition to winning games, CSK will also need to improve on the NRR front. With an NRR of -1.392, Chennai is the worst team out of the ten this season.
