IPL 2025: Predicting the starting four overseas players of GT

The last IPL season was a disappointment for the Gujarat Titans (GT) as they struggled under Shubman Gill’s captaincy. However, Gill will continue to lead the side in IPL 2025, and for GT to bounce back, contributions from their key Indian players and top overseas stars will be crucial.

Looking at their squad, they have some big foreign names who have the potential to be game-changers. If they step up and deliver match-winning performances, GT can turn things around and aim for a successful campaign this time.

Predicting the starting four overseas players of Gujarat Titans for the IPL 2025

1. Jos Buttler

The England wicketkeeper-batter, Jos Buttler, will be a key player in GT’s playing XI, given his attacking approach and vast IPL experience. However, he recently endured a disastrous Champions Trophy campaign, both as a batter and captain, as England failed to win a single game. Following the tournament, Buttler stepped down from captaincy, making IPL 2025 a perfect platform for him to bounce back.

GT invested INR 15.75 crore to acquire his services, banking on his proven track record in the league. Buttler has scored 3,582 runs in 107 IPL games at an impressive average of 38.11 and a strike rate of 147.53, including 19 fifties and seven centuries.

2. Rashid Khan

The Afghanistan leg-spinner, Rashid Khan, is one of the five players the Gujarat Titans (GT) have retained, and for good reason. Not just in the IPL, but in world cricket, Rashid is a game-changer who can singlehandedly turn matches in his team's favour. While his primary role is with the ball, his ability to smash sixes in the death overs adds significant value to his name.

Once again, in the upcoming season, Rashid’s all-round contributions will be crucial for GT’s success. The franchise invested INR 18 crore to retain him, and his IPL record speaks for itself—149 wickets in 121 matches, along with a blistering batting strike rate of 161.72.

3. Kagiso Rabada

The South African pacer, Kagiso Rabada, is expected to lead GT’s pace attack, given his vast experience in both the IPL and international cricket. Having played 80 IPL matches and taken 117 wickets at an economy of 8.48, he brings a proven track record to the team. GT paid INR 10.75 crore to have him on the board for the next season.

Rabada was also in action for South Africa in the recent Champions Trophy, where he picked up six wickets in three games. For GT skipper Shubman Gill, having a bowler of Rabada’s caliber will be a huge advantage, especially in the powerplay with the new ball and later in the death overs when his accuracy and pace can make a difference.

4. Glenn Phillips

Glenn Phillips is primarily known for his explosive power-hitting in the middle overs and can also provide useful overs with his off-spin. However, his exceptional fielding has become a major talking point as he continues to set new standards with every game.

During New Zealand’s runner-up finish in the recent Champions Trophy, Phillips grabbed three stunning catches, further establishing himself as one of the best fielders in world cricket.

Despite having played only eight IPL matches so far—his last appearance coming in the 2023 edition—the Gujarat Titans invested INR 2 crore in him, recognizing his all-round value. His ability to change the game with both bat and fielding prowess makes him a strong contender for a place in the playing XI.
