IPL 2025: Who is the captain of Punjab kings?

Punjab Kings have one of the most passionate fan bases across India, and their fans have never lost faith in the team. The team was formerly known as Kings XI Punjab. The team name was changed to Punjab Kings in February 2021. The team’s owners include Mohit Burman, Ness Wadia, Preity Zinta and Karan Paul.

Punjab Kings has had arguably one of the best players in the world as their captains over a period of time, including Yuvraj Singh, Kumar Sangakkara, Adam Gilchrist, V Sehwag, etc. They all have to put up a great fight.

Punjab Kings have appointed their new captain in the name of Shreyas Lyer, who will be leading the team. Shreyas will look to make his mark this season of IPL, as captain, and will want to make PBKS champion for the first time. Shreyas Lyer was roped in by PBKS for a record breaking 26.75 crore INR, making him the second-most expensive player during the mega auction.

He is an exceptional player, bringing stability and leadership to the team. He had earlier captained the Delhi Capitals for a period of time, during which they made it to the playoffs in three consecutive seasons. He also captained KKR, leading them to their third IPL victory, becoming the first captain to win both the IPL and SMAT in the same year.

Shikhar Dhawan was the skipper of the team in the last season. However, he was withdrawn from the team and was replaced by Jitesh Sharma and Sam Curran as stand-ins.  Jitesh Sharma led the team in the final game of the season against Sunrisers Hyderabad. Mid-season captaincy changes led to the Punjab Kings finishing the 2024 season in ninth place.

Punjab Kings are considered one of the most underperforming franchises in the league. Excluding the 2014 season, where they topped the league stage and finished as runners-up. The team has reached the other playoffs only once since then.
