Chennai Super Kings (CSK) had a horrible IPL 2025 season, finishing last with just four wins in 14 games. Expectations are high among fans for a strong comeback in the upcoming season. CSK are heading for a major overhaul, as they have released the highest number of players (11) ahead of the IPL 2026 mini-auction.
With 16 players retained, they now have nine available spots, including four overseas slots. Based on their retentions and their potential playing XI, CSK need batters—especially an opener after releasing New Zealand’s Devon Conway—and someone who can play the finisher’s role after letting go of Ravindra Jadeja, Sam Curran, Deepak Hooda and others.
Here are the 5 batters CSK might target in the IPL 2026 mini-auction
1. Quinton de Kock
This veteran South African batter could take over the role that Devon Conway played as an opener. With Conway released, a left-handed wicketkeeper-batter like Quinton de Kock might be the best fit.
He had a tough 2025 season, scoring 152 runs in eight innings, including an unbeaten 97, but his experience of 115 IPL matches makes him a strong option for CSK. He can be that explosive option at the top or can also play the second fiddle role, depending on the conditions.
2. Andre Russell
Rumours are growing that CSK could target former KKR all-rounder Andre Russell. His long 11-year journey with KKR ended after the franchise released him. Russell’s power-hitting, ability to bowl crucial overs at the death, and athletic fielding make him a player to watch out for.
However, fitness will be a key factor, as he is now 37 and workload management will be important. Still, with experience from 140 IPL matches, he could be the X-factor CSK need.
3. David Miller
After trading both Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran to the Rajasthan Royals (RR) to bring in Sanju Samson, CSK need proven finishers. South Africa’s David Miller fits that role. Although he scored only 153 runs in 11 innings at a strike rate of 127.49 in 2025, he has the experience of 141 IPL games and could revive his form while giving CSK the finishing strength they currently lack.
4. Venkatesh Iyer
Venkatesh Iyer is an interesting Indian all-round option. He can bat at the top, either as an opener or at number three, and adds medium-pace bowling as well. Despite being bought for a massive Rs. 23.75 crore and being named vice-captain by Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) last season, he had a poor year, scoring only 142 runs in seven innings. KKR released him, but CSK may look at him as someone who can bring stability to the batting order.
5. Liam Livingstone
Another power-hitter CSK might consider is England’s Liam Livingstone, who has been released by Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). Despite being part of RCB’s IPL 2025 title-winning squad, Livingstone managed only 112 runs in eight innings and picked up just two wickets. He is known for hitting huge sixes and offering useful spin in the middle overs. Considering Chennai’s pitch conditions, he could be a strong fit for CSK in the coming seasons.
