In Abu Dhabi, the five-time champions, Chennai Super Kings, stole the show—but not with their customary veteran cherry-picking approach in the recent IPL 2026 auction.
Prior to the November 15 retention deadline, CSK had already parted ways with two great spinners: Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran were dealt to Rajasthan Royals in exchange for Sanju Samson, and Ravichandran Ashwin had retired from the IPL.
Rather, they stunned everyone by spending an enormous ₹28.40 crore on two teenage rookies, Kartik Sharma and Prashant Veer.
These unproven talents were purchased for ₹14.20 crore each, and management sees them as long-term investments to take the place of celebrities like Jadeja. Fans disagree, though, on whether investing so much in potential rather than experience is a wise bet.
For Rs 5.20 crore, the team acquired seasoned leg-spinner Rahul Chahar in addition to the high-profile additions of Prashant Veer and Kartik Sharma. Akeal Hosein and Matt Henry, who were both purchased for Rs 2 crore, were overseas acquisitions, and Matthew Short provided more all-around depth.
Aman Khan and Zak Foulkes completed the team, and Sarfaraz Khan was added for Rs 75 lakh to strengthen the middle order. The Chennai Super Kings seem well-positioned to contend once more as they aim to add a sixth IPL crown to their legendary record thanks to a combination of seasoned campaigners, exciting uncapped talent, and astute international selections.
