The Mumbai Indians had the lowest purse going into the IPL 2026 mini-auction. The five-time champions were among the least active teams in Abu Dhabi despite having previously established a well-balanced core. With a purse of INR 2.75 crore and 20 players already in place, MI needed to recruit no more than five players, including one international option.

The five-time winners didn't have a busy day at the auction table because they completed most of their business during the trading window. Big names were already out of their way with the least amount to spend. It is unclear if they will be able to acquire their top targets while having uncapped homegrown talent.

For as little as Rs 1 lakh, MI made the incredible decision to reclaim their former player Quinton de Kock. For South African wicketkeeper-batter Ryan Rickelton, who made an impression in his first IPL season earlier this year, it will be an excellent backup. Prior to the auction, MI had released uncapped player Krishnan Shrijith, who offered a similar function but was not given a game. De Kock's acquisition only strengthens MI's team.

MI head coach Mahela Jayawardene said the team feels lucky to have De Kock back after securing him. “We were lucky (laughs). Quinny has been part of the MI family across franchises and in the past,” according to Jayawardene.

Mumbai then filled the remaining spots with untapped Indian talent, paying INR 30 lakh apiece for Danish Malewar, Mohammad Izhar, Atharva Ankolekar, and Mayank Rawat. It appears that the Mumbai-based team will support the same lineup that placed third in the 2025 Indian Premier League.

The Mumbai Indians purchased just five players at the auction, four of which were uncapped Indians, making them the least active team overall. Although in jest, MI co-owner Akash Ambani did express interest in Cameron Green.
