IPL 2026: Shardul Thakur & Sherfane Rutherford traded to Mumbai Indians

Mumbai Indians have acquired the services of the bowling all-rounder Shardul Thakur from the Lucknow Super Giants and West Indies batting all-rounder Sherfane Rutherford from the Gujarat Titans ahead of the IPL 2026 mini-auction, scheduled to take place next month.

While Thakur joined the MI set-up for a whopping price of INR 2 Crore, Rutherford was roped in by the Mumbai-based franchise for the price of INR 2.6 Crore, adding depth to their middle and lower middle-order.

Speaking about Thakur, he was acquired by the Super Giants in the IPL 2025 season as a replacement player for Mohsin Khan, at his base price of INR 2 Crore. In the last season, he played 10 games, scalping 13 wickets with the best figures of 4/34.

The 34-year-old Indian all-rounder has represented PBKS, RPS, CSK, DC, KKR, and LSG in his 10-year IPL career. This will be the first time the bowling all-rounder will step up into the Mumbai Indians set-up. 

On the other hand, the 27-year-old Sherfane Rutherford has featured in 44 T20Is for the West Indies, scoring 588 runs at an average of 18.37. In the IPL, he has played 23 matches for the Delhi Capitals (2019), Royal Challengers Bangalore (2022), and Kolkata Knight Riders (2024).

Interestingly, he was also part of the MI squad in 2020 but did not make it to the final playing XI. Rutherford has played 23 matches in IPL, scoring 397 runs at an average of 24.81 and a strike rate of 137.37. In the 2025 season, he featured in 13 matches, amassing 291 runs at an average of 32.33 and a strike rate of 157.30 with 22 fours and 18 sixes.

For the unversed, the Mumbai Indians have won the IPL title five times, making them the joint-most successful franchise alongside the Chennai Super Kings.
