Delhi Capitals (DC) finished their IPL 2025 campaign in fifth place with 15 points from 14 games and a net run rate of +0.011. At one stage, DC looked like one of the frontrunners for a top-two finish, especially with the way they began their campaign.
However, a poor run in the latter half of the tournament saw them lose momentum and eventually miss out on a playoff spot. As they continue their search for a maiden IPL title, DC must address some critical areas to improve their performance in the 2026 season.
Here are the three changes DC needs to make to win IPL 2026:
Establishing a Settled Opening Pair
Throughout the season, DC experimented with multiple opening combinations involving Faf du Plessis, Abishek Porel, and Karun Nair. This lack of consistency at the top impacted their ability to get solid starts, which proved costly in several matches.
Heading into IPL 2026, DC must identify a reliable and settled opening pair and stick with them for a longer duration. Stability at the top can provide the foundation for bigger totals and more confident chases, both of which were missing in their 2025 campaign.
Replacing Mohit Sharma with a More Effective Pacer
Mohit Sharma, a seasoned Indian pacer, was brought in by DC with the expectation that his experience and skill—especially his slower deliveries—would prove valuable in pressure situations. However, he managed to pick up only two wickets in eight games while conceding runs at an economy of 10.28.
With T Natarajan recovering from injury during most of the season and not being fully available, DC lacked a reliable Indian pace option. Moving forward, a fully fit Natarajan should be part of their starting XI from the very beginning.
DC should look to replace Mohit Sharma with a younger, more effective pacer who can provide better results in both the powerplay and death overs.
Leadership Change
Axar Patel was named the skipper of DC ahead of IPL 2025. While the team started well under his leadership, once they began to lose momentum, there appeared to be no comeback. Axar seemed out of ideas during crunch moments, and the side lacked direction when it mattered most.
Considering this, DC could opt for a change in leadership. Someone like KL Rahul, who has led in the IPL and at the international level, could bring more tactical depth and composure. With his calm demeanor and experience, Rahul could be a more suitable candidate to lead DC in their pursuit of a title.
