Mumbai Indians (MI) made a slow start to their IPL 2025 campaign but bounced back strongly to finish fourth in the league stage with 16 points from 14 games and a healthy net run rate of +1.142. They defeated Gujarat Titans (GT) in the Eliminator to qualify for Qualifier 2. However, their journey ended there, as they were knocked out by Punjab Kings (PBKS).
After a disappointing IPL 2024, fans were pleased with MI’s turnaround under Hardik Pandya’s captaincy. But in their quest for a record-extending sixth IPL title in 2026, there are still a few areas where improvements are necessary.
Here are the three changes MI needs to make to win IPL 2026:
Having a Proven Indian Spinner
One of the biggest gaps in MI’s squad remains the absence of a reliable Indian spinner. During the 2025 season, they used experienced Karn Sharma and youngster Vignesh Puthur, but it was unrealistic to expect consistent match-winning performances from either across the entire tournament.
Overseas spinner Mitchell Santner had a decent run, picking up 10 wickets in 13 games, but MI still lacked a quality Indian spinner who could bowl economically and pick up crucial wickets in the middle overs.
Ahead of IPL 2026, MI should focus on acquiring a proven Indian spinner to bolster this department and add much-needed control and variety in the middle phase of the innings.
Promoting Hardik Pandya Up the Batting Order
Hardik Pandya had a mixed season in 2025. As captain, he did well to take the team to Qualifier 2, but his personal performance was moderate — scoring 224 runs and picking up 14 wickets. More often than not, Hardik came in to bat lower down the order with only a few balls left to make an impact.
Given his ability, experience, and the destructive power he possesses, MI should consider sending him up the batting order. Giving him more time in the middle would allow him to settle in before launching his big shots, which could make a significant difference in close contests.
Backing Ashwani Kumar Over Deepak Chahar
MI’s pace department was led superbly by Trent Boult (22 wickets) and Jasprit Bumrah (18 wickets). However, Deepak Chahar didn’t meet expectations. He managed only 11 wickets and struggled, especially during death overs when his team needed control the most.
In contrast, young Ashwani Kumar made the most of his opportunities. He played just seven matches but finished with 11 wickets, impressing fans and experts alike with his temperament and performance on big occasions.
Based on that impact, MI would be wise to back Ashwani Kumar from the beginning of IPL 2026 and pair him with Bumrah and Boult to form a formidable pace trio.
