IPL: 3 Changes RR Needs to Make to Win IPL 2026

Rajasthan Royals (RR) had another disappointing outing in IPL 2025, finishing in ninth place. They managed only eight points from 14 games, with a net run rate of -0.549. Throughout the season, their regular skipper Sanju Samson struggled with injury issues, which significantly affected their campaign.

Heading into IPL 2026, RR needs to make some important changes to become serious contenders—at the very least—for a playoff spot.

Here are the three changes RR needs to make to win IPL 2026:

Finding a Replacement for Shimron Hetmyer

Many RR fans were surprised when the team decided to retain West Indies batter Shimron Hetmyer, known for his power-hitting in the middle order as a finisher. However, consistency has always been an issue with him. Despite the faith shown by the management, Hetmyer once again failed to deliver on a regular basis.

He scored just 239 runs in 13 innings at a strike rate of 145.73 and failed to close out matches on multiple occasions. Going forward, RR should consider releasing him and bringing in a more reliable overseas option who can consistently play the finisher’s role.

Inclusion of Indian Spinners

Before IPL 2025, RR raised eyebrows by not retaining either Ravichandran Ashwin or Yuzvendra Chahal—two of the most experienced and proven Indian spinners in IPL history. After the mega auction, RR brought in two overseas spinners from Sri Lanka—Wanindu Hasaranga and Maheesh Theekshana.

While both took 11 wickets each, their inclusion created problems with team balance. Having two overseas spinners limited flexibility in selecting other overseas players and disrupted the overall combination.

To address this, RR should target experienced Indian spinners who can play regularly and complement either or both of Theekshana and Hasaranga, while providing crucial balance to the playing XI.

Strengthening the Indian Pace Attack

RR’s Indian pacers struggled throughout the season. Sandeep Sharma and Tushar Deshpande took nine wickets each but were expensive, with economy rates of 9.89 and 10.62 respectively. Akash Madhwal and Yudhvir Singh also featured in four games each but conceded runs at an economy of over 11.

Such figures highlight the urgent need for better Indian fast-bowling options. RR should look for pacers who can not only take wickets but also maintain control with the ball, especially during the powerplay and at the death.
