IPL: 3 Expensive MI signings who turned out to be major flops

The Mumbai Indians (MI), one of the most successful franchises in IPL history, endured a disappointing campaign in IPL 2025, finishing near the bottom of the table. Despite investing heavily in high-profile signings ahead of the season, many of those big-money acquisitions failed to deliver when it mattered most.

Expectations were high, but inconsistent performances and lack of impact played a major role in MI’s underwhelming season.

Here are the 3 Expensive MI signings who turned out to be major flops in IPL 2025:

1. Mujeeb Ur Rahman

Only one IPL 2025 match was played by Mujeeb Ur Rahman, who paid INR 2 crore to sign as Allah Ghazanfar's replacement. His two overs against GT cost MI 28 runs and he picked one wicket. He was benched for the remainder of the season due to his costly spell and lack of effect.

MI had anticipated his off-spin and success in foreign T20 leagues would help their bowling unit, but he was unable to capture important wickets or contain runs. His brief tenure demonstrated how challenging it is to adjust to the intensity of the IPL.

2. Naman Dhir

MI acquired Naman Dhir using RTM card for INR 5.25 crore, and he made 252 runs in the IPL 2025. He struggled to turn beginnings into significant innings, despite displaying moments of brilliance, including a top score of 46. His price tag was not reflected in his average or strike rate.

Dhir did not contribute with the ball and went wicketless as well. MI had relied on his versatility, but he didn't live up to expectations in either area. MI didn't get the returns they were hoping for from his season.

3. Deepak Chahar

Despite being hired to bolster MI's pace attack, Deepak Chahar struggled with injuries and form fluctuations in IPL 2205. Due to fitness concerns, he was unable to play in important games, such as the Qualifier 2 encounter versus Punjab Kings. The bowling attack suffered greatly as a result of his absence.

Chahar was unable to make an effect with the ball even while he was playing. MI's reliance on him proved to be a costly miscalculation as his performances fell far short of expectations.
