Careers have been made and broken in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Some players exhibit potential but eventually wane because of form, fitness, or competition, while others shine continuously. These five cricket players had promising beginnings but eventually faded from the IPL limelight.
Their experiences demonstrate the intense rivalry in the league and the need for continuous improvement and performance to maintain success.
Here are 5 Cricketers who faded away from the league:
1. Praveen Kumar
With his furious swing bowling for Kings XI Punjab and Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Praveen Kumar made his IPL debut in 2008. He showed great skill in the last overs, taking 90 wickets at an economy rate of 7.72 over 119 IPL games. At first, he was a great asset since he could swing the ball both ways.
But his career was marred by fitness problems and injuries. After 2015, appearances decreased due to inconsistency and a lack of pace. Praveen lost his job as younger bowlers rose to prominence, and he eventually faded out of the IPL after his final appearance in 2017 at 31.
2. Manvinder Bisla
With his iconic 89 off 48 balls in the 2012 IPL final for the Kolkata Knight Riders, Manvinder Bisla became a cult legend. He demonstrated explosive batting potential by scoring 798 runs at a strike rate of 113.67 in 39 IPL games. At his best, he was a fan favorite because of his daring flair.
Bisla had trouble staying consistent, even with early success. His downturn was caused by his inability to adjust to changing T20 demands and competition from up-and-coming keepers. Before fading into oblivion when his IPL career abruptly ended, Bisla last played a few games for RCB in 2015.
3. Saurabh Tiwary
As a potential middle-order batsman, Saurabh Tiwary made his debut with the Mumbai Indians. He amassed 1,494 runs at a strike rate of 120.16 in 93 IPL games. He was well-known for his strong striking and could have changed the course of the game. Coming from the same batch as Ravindra Jadeja and Virat Kohli, he was expected to do big things.
Tiwary's performance declined, he developed fitness problems, and his retention suffered from a lack of high scores. Having trouble staying consistent and competing with younger players, he was let go by several teams. Tiwary attempted a comeback for MI in the IPL 2020 and 2021 following the 2017 IPL; however, he made a few appearances and eventually faded from the league.
4. Paul Valthaty
When Paul Valthaty scored 120 against the Chennai Super Kings in 2011, everyone was taken aback. He did, however, only achieve 205 runs at a strike rate of 120.81 in 23 IPL games, displaying occasional bursts of genius but falling short of expectations. After he amassed 463 runs with that ton and two fifties for the Punjab team in the 2011 Indian Premier League, his strong hitting was not maintained.
His chances were hampered by injuries and bad form. After the 2013 IPL season, Valthaty failed to make a comeback after being dropped for failing to establish himself in the face of fierce competition. Despite his early promise, his IPL career ended early.
5. Sudeep Tyagi
Sudeep Tyagi primarily played for the Chennai Super Kings in 14 IPL games. He displayed flashes of raw pace as he claimed six wickets at an economy rate of 8.46. His rhythm and fitness were hindered by ailments, despite his promise. In 2010, he sustained a severe back injury from which he never fully recovered.
His IPL chances were hampered by his lack of control and competition from more reliable pacers. Due to form and back injury concerns, he opted to retire from the IPL in 2022 at the age of 33. He last played in the league in 2010.
