IPL: 5 Teams that need a new captain next season

The Indian Premier League 2025 is pacing quickly towards the end of the season, and every team seems to have figured out their strengths and weaknesses. While some teams have been in extremely good positions, some have been reeling to get wins under their belt. Five of such teams mentioned below can be looking for new captains for the next season.

Chennai Super Kings

The Chennai Super Kings are in an extremely bad state, having won just two games from their nine so far and are probably having their worst season of the tournament. The team is not seeming to be able to do anything right this season, especially with their batting order.

The team has struggled to get going with the bat, and the only batter who looked good, their skipper, Ruturaj Gaikwad, got injured. The team is being led by Dhoni currently, but it is common knowledge that this can’t be a long-term solution. The team will need to look for new and better leaders for next season.

Rajasthan Royals

Similar to the Chennai Super Kings, Rajasthan has also been struggling. Their state seems to be much worse, though, especially with them not being able to figure out their primary concern. Their batting is not working, bowling does not look sharp, and fielders have been sloppy on the field.

Sanju Samson has been the skipper of the side, but he has been irregular this year due to several injury concerns. Riyan Parag has been appointed as the interim skipper, but the team has struggled to get over the line even after coming extremely close to the finishing line. They should be looking for better leadership.

Kolkata Knight Riders

The defending champions of the tournament, Kolkata Knight Riders, have not had a good season as well. They have played a total of nine games till the time this is being written, and they have managed to win just three of them, finding themselves in the eighth position and almost out of the season.

They let go of their title-winning captain, Shreyas Iyer, before the recent mega auctions. Ajinkya Rahane was appointed as the leader, and he did a decent job with the bat, but he has not been able to get the best out of his team and so the team can look for somebody else for the role.

Sunrisers Hyderabad 

Another team to struggle really badly this season has been the finalists of the previous season, Sunrisers Hyderabad. They have played an ultra-aggressive brand of cricket, which resulted in success for them last season, as it came as a surprise for everyone.

However, it seems that teams have been able to figure out tricks against them. They have managed to bat well only in a couple of games and as a result are placed third to the last in the points table. Such a good team deserves a much better place, and probably better leadership can help it.

Lucknow Super Giants

Lucknow Super Giants is still very much alive in the tournament, having won five of their nine games and placed sixth in the points table. The team is being led by the wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant who is struggling with the bat but is doing a decent job as the captain.

Even though the team is doing quite a decent job so far and can still qualify for the play-offs, not many will say that they will. They seem to lack the venom to be a dominant team, even though they have won five games already. Relieving Pant from leadership roles might help him get the runs and be a match-winner for the team.
