IPL: What are the salaries earned by umpires?

The Indian Premier League 2025 sits on the horizon as the cricketing extravaganza kicks off on March 22. Defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders open their campaign against Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. 

Ten teams will look to put their best foot forward in the 65-day-long tournament, which will span around 13 different venues and feature 74 gripping games. Kolkata will host the tournament opener and the final alongside Qualifier 2. Apart from the Eden Gardens of Kolkata, the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad has been awarded the other two playoff matches: Qualifier 1 and Eliminator. 

Eyes will be pinned on the star players ready to give their all in the high-octane clashes. Notably, while the players make crores of money from the Indian cash-rich league, other stakeholders like the umpires also make big money from the tournament. 

The umpires are categorised in different categories, which define their salaries too. The elite-level umpires get the biggest chunk of the money, while the developmental umpires take the smaller portion. 

Apart from the two categories, earnings depend on the type of match. The umpires earn much more money in a playoff and the final than in league-stage games. 

Media reports suggest that an elite umpire bags a handsome sum of Rs 1,98,000 for each league stage match that they officiate in. They also get a daily allowance of Rs 12,000. A developmental umpire takes home Rs 59,000 for a league-stage game. 

The earnings hit the sky in the playoffs and in the final. An elite umpire takes home Rs 5,20,000 for officiating in a playoff, while they bag 6,94,000 for doing the job in the final. 

Apart from their match earnings, umpires also get money from sponsorships. By the end of an IPL season, an umpire can earn Rs 733,000 from sponsorship deals. 

These deals and on-match earnings make the umpires earn handsome amounts from IPL, valuing the thankless and hard job they do on the field and making those tough decisions in seconds that change the course of the matches. These decisions can also change players' careers to an extent.
